Fatal Portsmouth Car Accident
Authorities are seeking answers following a deadly collision in Portsmouth this weekend. 13NewsNow reports that the incident occurred around 2 A.M. the morning of August 7, 2021. The driver of a 2009 BMW was heading westbound on I-264 when he attempted to take the exit for Portsmouth Blvd. and lost control of the vehicle. The car ran offroad, hitting multiple trees before coming to a stop. A passenger – despite wearing their seatbelt – died on impact. The driver, who was not wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash, was thrown from the car and suffered life-threatening injuries.
No Alcohol Involved
Many people assume that middle-of-the-night crashes are the result of drunk driving, especially on the weekends. In this case, authorities say no alcohol was involved. But booze isn’t the only thing that can jeopardize a motorist’s safety behind the wheel. Given the late hour, it’s possible that the driver nodded off behind the wheel. Drowsy driving doesn’t have the same stigma that drunk driving does, but it’s just as dangerous.
Legal Recourse for Accident Victims
Regardless of why exactly this crash occurred, a family is now grieving the untimely death of their son. Wrongful death lawsuits can’t turn back the clock and prevent the accident, but they can help give families a sense of justice and peace after their loss. In Virginia, the victim’s next of kin – usually their spouse, mother, or father – can file a wrongful death suit to recoup the costs associated with funeral expenses, lost wages, and more.
