Child Dragged Underneath Treadmill (Caught on Video)
A disturbing video shows just how dangerous the Peloton Tread+ can be for little ones. Regulators say they released the footage to demonstrate how quickly children can become injured by the exercise machine.
In the video, a young boy is playing near the treadmill when his ball gets trapped under the equipment. The child struggles to go after the ball and finds himself stuck as the treadmill spins on freely. Thankfully, he’s able to free himself without injury, but the footage is indeed shocking to witness.
CPSC Warns Consumers
On April 17th, 2021, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a warning to stop using the popular Peloton Tread+ treadmill altogether. The machine has been linked with at least 39 incidents and the death of a 6-year-old boy.
“CPSC staff believes the Peloton Tread+ poses serious risks to children for abrasions, fractures, and death. In light of multiple reports of children becoming entrapped, pinned, and pulled under the rear roller of the product, CPSC urges consumers with children at home to stop using the product immediately.”
Peloton Tread+ Treadmill Recall
After pushback from Peloton’s CEO, the Peloton Tread+ treadmill was finally recalled on May 5th, 2021. The dangerous treadmill has been linked to 70 incidents and the death of a child. According to the CPSC, “Adult users, children, pets and objects can be pulled underneath the rear of the treadmill, posing a risk of injury or death.”
Dangerous & Defective Products
Fitness companies owe it to consumers to offer safe equipment for home use. They also have a duty to warn customers of the potential dangers associated with their products.
Even the way they showcase products in advertisements must be scrutinized. For instance, if a family sees an ad with a treadmill set up in the living room, they may assume it’s a safe addition to their own family room. In reality, fitness equipment should be located in a separate room that can be shut away from kids and pets who may hurt themselves on a treadmill.
