Six Injured in Crash on I-264 in Virginia Beach

A chain-reaction crash on Interstate 264 westbound near First Colonial Road in Virginia Beach left six people injured during the early morning hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 1:09 a.m. and involved four vehicles. One driver was charged with reckless driving following the collision, and the crash remains under investigation.

According to investigators, the crash began when a vehicle rear-ended another car, sending it off the roadway and into a guardrail. The striking vehicle also hit a guardrail and came to rest partially in the travel lane.

A third vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid the wreck but struck a guardrail, while a fourth vehicle collided with the disabled vehicle remaining in the roadway. Six people suffered injuries that were reported to be non-life-threatening.

Determining Liability After a Chain-Reaction Crash

Chain-reaction crashes are often more complicated than a typical two-vehicle collision. Although Virginia State Police charged one driver with reckless driving, a traffic citation alone does not determine who is legally responsible for everyone’s injuries.

Instead, investigators and insurance companies look at how the crash unfolded and whether the initial collision set the chain of events in motion. They may review the police report, witness statements, vehicle damage, photographs, and any available surveillance or dash camera footage.

For example, if one driver causes the initial crash but another driver is following too closely and cannot stop in time, both drivers’ actions may become part of the liability analysis.

Virginia follows the doctrine of pure contributory negligence, meaning an injured person who is found even slightly at fault may be barred from recovering compensation. That makes a thorough investigation especially important in multi-vehicle crashes, where determining exactly how the collision occurred can have a significant impact on a personal injury claim.
