Fatal Mathews County Crash After Trailer Detaches from Truck

A tragic death occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after a trailer disconnected from a pickup truck and struck a vehicle in Mathews County.

According to Virginia State Police, units responded to the crash in the area between New Point Friends Church and Mathews Station Five. Upon arrival, officers found a person who had been driving a 2002 Ford F-250 with fatal injuries.

According to the preliminary investigation, a trailer became disconnected from a 2023 Chevrolet 2500 and struck the Ford, causing the driver’s death.

The driver of the Chevrolet has been charged with operating an uninspected trailer, and failing to properly secure a load. The investigation is ongoing.
