Fatal Crash in Isle of Wight on Route 17 in Carrollton, VA
On the afternoon of Sunday, July 13, a 72-year-old man was killed in a T-bone crash at the intersection of Route 17 and Northgate Drive in Carrollton, Virginia.
According to reports, the crash happened just before 2:00 p.m. when a small SUV attempted to cross northbound traffic on Route 17 from Northgate Drive. During the crossing, the SUV was struck on the driver’s side by a sedan traveling north on Route 17. The force of the collision caused catastrophic damage to the SUV, particularly on the side where the driver was seated.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, and both drivers were transported to Riverside Regional Hospital. The driver of the SUV, a 72-year-old man, later succumbed to his injuries. The other driver, a 24-year-old man from Hampton, sustained serious injuries but survived.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. At the time of this writing, full circumstances remain under investigation.
T-bone crashes, also known as side-impact or broadside collisions, occur when the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another. These accidents are especially dangerous because the sides of vehicles typically offer far less protection than the front or rear. When these crashes happen at high speeds, the results are often fatal or lead to severe, life-altering injuries.
Intersections, particularly those where vehicles must cross or merge with high-speed traffic, are common sites for this type of collision. Misjudging the speed or distance of oncoming vehicles, limited visibility, and driver distraction are all contributing factors.
Under Virginia traffic law, drivers entering a highway from a side road or driveway must yield the right of way to vehicles already traveling on the highway.
From a legal standpoint, car accidents like this one often involve complex questions of fault and liability. If a driver was attempting to cross a highway and failed to yield the right of way, they may be considered at fault. However, the details matter. Investigators will look closely at whether speed, distraction, road conditions, played a role.
