Man Dies After Being Struck by Delivery Truck in Norfolk

A resident tragically died Friday 20, 2026 after being hit by a large delivery truck on Rogers Avenue in Norfolk.

Norfolk Police say the truck driver was in the process of backing into a parking lot when the victim was struck. Fire-Rescue pronounced him deceased at the scene.

The driver stayed on scene and cooperated with responding officers. Investigators have indicated that speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors. The case remains under active investigation.

Legal Options After a Fatal Accident

The sudden death of a family member in a traffic accident leaves loved ones overwhelmed, not just emotionally, but practically.

Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of financial support can create enormous strain at an already unbearable time. Virginia’s wrongful death statute exists to protect families in situations where negligence played a role.

In Virginia, when a person’s death is caused by the wrongful act or negligence of another, the deceased’s beneficiaries may bring a civil claim to help the suffering family with:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical costs incurred between the accident and the time of death
  • Lost wages and the economic support the deceased would have provided
  • Loss of care, guidance, and services
  • Loss of companionship and society
  • Sorrow, mental anguish, and grief suffered by surviving family members

Virginia’s wrongful death statute has a two-year statute of limitations, meaning families have a limited window to take action. Speaking with an attorney early helps protect those rights and preserves critical evidence.

Commercial Vehicle Accidents are Complex

Accidents involving commercial vehicles raise a distinct set of liability questions. While the driver’s conduct is a natural starting point, the inquiry rarely ends there. An employer can be held liable for the negligent actions of an employee acting within the scope of their job duties.

A thorough investigation that includes an examination of the vehicle, driver records, and company policies is often essential to building a complete picture of what went wrong.

Commercial carriers and their insurers are experienced at handling these claims and typically begin their own investigation immediately after a serious accident. Families who wait too long to seek legal counsel may find they are disadvantaged later.
