Official CPSC Recall: Fisher-Price Recalls More than 2 Million Snuga Infant Swings Due to Suffocation Hazard After 5 Deaths Reported

Snuga Swings Infant Deaths

Between 2012 and 2022, five infants aged 1 to 3 months suffocated while using the swings for sleep. In most cases, the infants were unrestrained, and additional bedding materials had been placed in the swing, exacerbating the risk.

CPSC Recommendations

The CPSC emphasizes that the Snuga Swings should never be used for sleep and that adding bedding materials like blankets or pillows significantly increases the risk of suffocation.

Consumers are advised to immediately remove the headrest and body support insert from the swing and discontinue its use for sleep purposes. Fisher-Price is offering a $25 refund to consumers who comply with these instructions.

CPSC Commissioner Richard L. Trumka Jr. has criticized the recall measures as insufficient, urging families to discard the product entirely to ensure infant safety. He stated that the current remedy does not adequately protect babies and that the product should be removed from homes altogether.

Ongoing Fisher-Price Recalls

This recall is not the first instance of Fisher-Price products being linked to infant fatalities. The company’s Rock ‘n Play sleeper, launched in 2009, was recalled in 2019 after being associated with approximately 100 infant deaths due to similar suffocation hazards.

Despite the recall, reports indicate that some of these products remain in use, underscoring the challenges in effectively removing hazardous infant products from circulation.

What to Do if You Own a Snuga Swing

Consumers who own a Fisher-Price Snuga Swing are urged to stop using the product immediately and contact Fisher-Price for further instructions and to receive the $25 refund. For more information, consumers can reach Fisher-Price toll-free at 855-853-6224.

The CPSC continues to advocate for stringent safety standards for infant products and reminds caregivers to always place infants on their backs on a firm, flat surface without any additional bedding or soft materials to reduce the risk of suffocation.
