Pit Bull Attacks, Kills Hampton Woman
A Hampton woman has died from injuries sustained by her family’s pet pit bull. The incident occurred earlier this week in the 100 block of Powhatan Parkway. Reports show that the victim was standing in her yard with the dog when it suddenly lunged at her throat. Neighbors heard the woman’s cries for help, and an elderly family member rushed out to pull the dog off of her to no avail. The victim was reportedly losing blood and unconscious when the dog was finally pulled off.
A Tragedy at Home
While initial reports indicated that the victim’s injuries were life-threatening, police soon updated the media that the woman had succumbed to her injuries. The 92-pound pit bull mix has been removed from the home and is now in the custody of Hampton Animal Control. The dog will be euthanized after a ten-day quarantine. The family’s other four dogs remain at home.
Unpredictable, Dangerous Dogs
While we’d like to believe our pets are true members of the family, they are animals first and foremost. They can lash out violently when we least expect. It’s not clear what triggered this attack, but the truth is that dog owners can do everything right and still find themselves victimized by their pets. Without a dog’s full history, there’s no way to know if they have violent predilections.
We send our thoughts and prayers to the grieving family during this surely difficult time, and encourage all dog lovers to practice care around their pets, even if they don’t believe their dog could act out in violent ways.
