Mail Carriers Face Dog Bite Risks in Virginia

2020 was a challenging year for everyone. Lockdowns, quarantines, and remote work became the norm overnight. For many Americans, the onset of COVID-19 meant ordering more and more products delivered to their front doors. The unintended consequence of this trend? An increased rate of mail carriers attacked by dogs. The USPS reports that more than 5,800 mail carriers were injured in dog attacks in 2020 alone.

Virginia Ranks Among Top 10

Virginia postal workers were among some of the most frequently injured employees. The state came in tenth place for overall dog attacks on postal workers, with 169 separate incidents. Details on these attacks were not shared publicly, but we have to assume that at least some of these victims walked away with life-altering injuries. Scars may fade with time, but the psychological impact of these attacks may linger for years to come.

Preventing Attacks on Postal Workers

If you have a dog, you can help be a part of the solution. Keep your pet restrained – or better yet, indoors – when you’re expecting a visit from the USPS. Dogs are very instinctive, protective animals who will do anything to guard their territory. Even the most highly trained, well-behaved pups can find themselves overwhelmed by the urge to fend off visitors like mail carriers. By keeping dogs out of sight of these workers, you can help minimize the risk of attacks. While you’re at it, consider posting a sign cautioning visitors about your dog’s presence. Mail carriers can be on guard and protect themselves when they see this kind of signage.
