President of DePuy Orthepedics Division of Johnson & Johnson Resigns

According to a article, the President of the DePuy Orthopedics Division of Johnson and Johnson announced his resignation last week.  David Floyd who is the worldwide executive of Johnson and Johnson’s implant unit will leave at the end of March.

DePuy Orthopedics, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, is a manufacturer of hip and knee implants.  The company had recently been struggling with recalls, and are now facing lawsuits by patients who have defective hip implants. The implants include the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.

It is believed that the devices have a design flaw which makes it difficult to implant correctly. This has resulted in a high failure rate of the device, and patients have reported many symptoms associated with the implant many times requiring a second surgery.

Side effects related to the defective implant include:

  • Swelling in the hip/leg area
  • Difficulty walking for long periods of time
  • Implant detachment from bone
  • Fractures around sight of replacement
  • Dislocation of implant and resulting pain
