VDOT Worker Injured During Crash

A VDOT worker is fighting for his life after being struck by a vehicle as he assisted with an accident on I-395. Reports indicate he was hit by a Toyota Matrix while directing traffic away from the scene of the initial collision. The Matrix also hit a safety truck and the guardrail. Police charged the driver with reckless driving. Sadly, the VDOT worker sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in the hospital. Our thoughts go out to him and his family at what is surely a difficult time. Jobs like his are incredibly dangerous but provide crucial services necessary to keep our roads safe.

Tragically, Good Samaritans are injured all the time in scenarios like this one. Many forget about the dangers associated with walking on a highway and focus solely on assisting the person in need. Assist your fellow motorists by calling emergency services to help with rescue efforts. Unfortunately, as in this situation, even the experts can become seriously injured while helping others.

Safely Move Over

If you spot a car pulled over to the side of the road, try to switch lanes if you can. This holds especially true if the car is a police cruiser or emergency services vehicle. Be sure to obey Virginia’s move over law. Giving these folks a wide berth to conduct their business will keep everyone safer. Always be alert to changing traffic patterns and give yourself plenty of stopping distance from the car in front of you. Should you need to hit the brakes, you will be able to do so with the knowledge that you’ll be able to stop safely in time.
