Two Die in Fatal Rockbridge County Car Accident

Failing to yield to the right of way can be an easy mistake to make. It’s often difficult to see pedestrians in the road, or to decide who should go first when you pull up to a four way stop sign at the same time as another car. Indeed, motorists fail to yield on a quite frequent basis. Unfortunately, however, when someone fails to yield to the right of way, they open themselves and others up to dangerous accidents, like one that recently occurred in Rockbridge County.

Teen Driver Failed To Yield

The wreck happened when a Subaru filled with teens failed to yield to a pickup truck at the intersection of Route 501 and Route 130. Four of the teens were rushed to the hospital where one 17-year-old succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in the pickup truck also died due to injuries associated with the crash. According to news reports, the teen driver of the Subaru has been charged with failing to yield to the right of way.

Two lives have been lost due to a mistake made by an inexperienced young driver. There’s no telling why the driver failed to yield – it’s possible he might not have known about the law, or was distracted by his friends in the car. It’s accidents like these that remind us of why in Virginia, new drivers may have no more than one passenger under the age of 21 in the car for the first year they have their license or until they turn 18. Laws like this help prevent distracted driving incidents.

Our thoughts are with the families of those lost in the accident, and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
