A Portsmouth man has been arrested following an accident on Suffolk’s U.S. 58. Authorities say the man was speeding his BMW sedan down the road, weaving in and out of traffic when he clipped a Jeep. This caused the Jeep to flip over, injuring the driver who had done nothing more than be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thankfully, his injuries were non-life threatening, but he was taken to the hospital via helicopter.

Police say the BMW driver wasn’t the only one speeding at the time of the accident – several other vehicles were involved in the high speed racing. The driver responsible for the crash has been charged with felony racing causing serious bodily harm.

Dangers of Racing

Racing on the open road is never a good idea, but given the time of day that this accident occurred – just after 5 p.m. on a Monday – it was especially reckless. Roads were undoubtedly filled with evening commuters heading home from the office. It’s a wonder no other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Courts take street racing charges very seriously, as they’re one of the most dangerous kind of reckless driving. Even when it doesn’t result in injuries or accidents, street racing can result in jail time or the loss of your driver’s license. Recklessly speeding and changing lanes can even result in criminal charges. Information gathered during those court proceedings can be used to file personal injury claims later. These are all man injured in this crash to consider as he recovers.
