One dead, two injured in Suffolk head-on collision
A 22-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision in Suffolk. Two others involved in the accident suffered serious injuries. The crash was reported just after 5:45 p.m. on Nansemond Parkway. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
Head-on collisions are incredibly deadly. Most cars can sustain damage from the back or sides, but being struck from the front is often lethal. We wish the injured victims speedy recoveries, and our condolences to the family of the 22-year-old who was killed in the crash.
Collisions like this one are often caused by drowsy, drugged or drunk drivers who aren’t paying enough attention to the road. Distractions like cell phones are also a common cause of head-on crashes. Too often, distracted drivers accidentally drift into oncoming traffic, only realizing their mistake after it is too late.
Understandably, head-on collisions most often occur at intersections. If the signage or lights aren’t clear about who has the right of way, dangerous accidents can result. The police will need to conduct a thorough investigation to understand what factors played a role in this particular wreck. No matter the cause, this crash is incredibly tragic.
Head-on collisions only account for two percent of all traffic accidents, but they are responsible for more than 10 percent of all car accident deaths. Survivors of such crashes are often left with expensive health care bills. Many can’t work as they recover from the accident.
