Older Driver Safety Awareness Week Dec 2 - 6

Did you know December 2 through December 6 is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week? This is a great time for older drivers to learn how to stay safe while on the road. Along with this, it is the perfect opportunity to educate people on the issues drivers in this age bracket face.

Every day of the week, approximately 10,000 people in the United States turn 65. And as you know, a large number of these people are still driving.

These drivers face many issues, including everything from new-vehicle technology to crowded roadways.

AARP is doing its part in educating older drivers on how to stay safe. The organization is starting a new program next year, which will be known as AARP Smart Driver Course.

Are you an older driver? How about a loved one? If you answered yes to either of these questions, there are steps you can take to stay safe on the road at all times. Here are just a few of the many tips to consider:

  • Be aware of any health conditions that could impact your driving performance
  • Avoid distractions at all costs
  • Keep a safe driving distance
  • Check your medications (some of these could make you drowsy)
  • Keep a buffer between you and any obstacles around you

With this advice, these drivers can remain safe and ensure that they are able to drive for many more years to come.
