Northern VA Crash Kills 5-Year-Old
A multi-vehicle accident on I-66 in Haymarket, Virginia has claimed the life of a young girl. The crash occurred on Monday, August 15 when traffic began backing up near a construction zone on the highway. Two lanes were closing, forcing traffic to funnel through the remaining two lanes. The driver of a Nissan pickup truck failed to stop in time to account for the slowing traffic. They slammed into the Chevrolet Cobalt in front of them. Two other cars were damaged when the Cobalt was pushed forward by the momentum of the initial crash.
Tragically, the 5-year-old girl in the backseat of the Chevrolet Cobalt was pronounced dead at the scene. Her parents were flown to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The drivers of the other two vehicles were injured and treated on site. The driver of the Nissan pickup was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was charged with reckless driving.
Too often, drivers get into the flow of the highway and fail to pay close enough attention to changing traffic conditions. Construction zones can crop up seemingly out of nowhere, so when the vehicles ahead starting braking, it’s crucial that the drivers behind them also begin to reduce their speed. Leaving plenty of following distance is also critical in preventing this kind of crash. Had the driver of the pickup allowed himself more room for error, this horrific accident could have been avoided altogether.
