Fatal Burke, VA Crash Kills One, Injures Three

A teen driver was killed after a multi-vehicle accident in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by rescue workers. Three other people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The crash happened when the teen driver lost control of her vehicle on Lee Chapel Road. She was heading south when she swerved into oncoming traffic. She struck two cars before coming to a stop. Investigators say that speed was likely a factor in the crash.

High speed is often a factor in deadly crashes like this one. With less reaction time available, drivers often make bad choices when something goes wrong. Sadly, the highest risk is usually associated with the fastest driver. Studies have shown that drivers who travel above or below the speed limit are likely to be involved in an accident, but that the speedier drivers are more commonly injured or killed in such wrecks. On roads with complicated traffic patterns or lots of other vehicles, this risk greatly increases.

Car crashes kill thousands of people each year, particularly when speed is involved. The reality is that the human body is relatively soft, especially when compared to the thick windshields and hard plastic interiors of a car. When there are multiple impacts, as there was in this accident, the chance for serious head injuries increases. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest solutions to these problems, but even they can’t protect you from every danger. Speed is a deadly thing and should not be underestimated by drivers.
