Drunk Driver Crashes into Newport News Pool

We often write about car accidents in this blog, and sometimes we discuss swimming pool incidents as well. Rarely do the two topics combine. Earlier this week, though, a Newport News accident combined both topics in a thankfully injury-free incident.

Police say a 19-year-old drunk driver was arrested in Newport News late the night of July 4th, 2017. The driver allegedly ran over a parked Honda Civic on Fairfax Avenue before turning onto Arlington Avenue and striking a Buick. Finally, the drunk driver drove over a sidewalk, through a fence and into a neighborhood pool.

The man was arrested and charged with drunk driving and reckless driving. Thankfully, nobody was using the pool at the time of the accident. Given the holiday, the pool was likely full of families all day. It’s truly lucky that nobody was injured in this collision.

The pool remains out of service, which families in the neighborhood say could take months to repair.

The driver arrested was not only drunk at the time of the wreck, but was also underage. It is unclear whether he faces additional charges for drinking underage.

The fourth of July is one of the most dangerous nights of the year for drivers. Like New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day sees an uptick in drunk driving. If you can avoid driving on major holidays like these, we highly recommend staying off the road. Of course, if more people would choose an Uber or taxi over driving drunk, fewer accidents would happen every day.
