Driver Killed While Standing on I-64
A man has died following a crash on I-64 near Richmond. The March 23, 2017 collision occurred just after 9:00 in the morning, sources report.
The incident happened when the driver of a Cadillac towing a trailer stopped on the emergency shoulder of I-64. The man got out of his vehicle and was standing by the trailer when he was struck by a Hyundai. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the Hyundai was injured in the collision and taken to the hospital. State police are still investigating the collision and details are limited at this point. No charges have been filed so far, but it’s not out of the question for the driver of the Hyundai to face charges going forward.
“Move Over” Laws
Virginia’s “move over” law requires motorists to give folks on the emergency shoulder a lane for safety. That margin for error should be more than enough room to prevent serious accidents like this one.
Nearly 10 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur on the interstate. Highways are simply not meant for foot traffic, and with high speeds and rapidly changing traffic conditions, there are few places more dangerous for a pedestrian.
Of course, motorists on I-64 – and on all interstates – have a duty to watch out for road hazards – including pedestrians on the shoulder of the road. This incident is a good reminder for us all to move over a lane and give folks on the shoulder a wide berth. It’s a simple act that can save lives!
