Children Hospitalized After Newport News Crash
Police are searching for the driver of a red hatchback that caused a multi-vehicle accident Saturday. The July 15, 2017 collision in Newport News sent six people to the hospital with injuries.
Sources report that the wreck occurred when a 2004 Ford SUV heading southbound on I-664 around 8:30 AM was struck by the red hatchback. The driver of the SUV lost control and flipped over. The driver and five juvenile passengers were hospitalized, though none of the injuries were life-threatening. The driver of the hatchback fled the scene of the crash.
Cameras in the Monitor-Merrimac bridge-tunnel were unable to help track down the driver of the hatchback. Officials say the cameras don’t record video, just simply live-stream for monitoring purposes. Police encourage people to be on the lookout for a red hatchback with significant front-end damage. Anyone with information about the crash should call the Virginia State Police at 757-424-6800.
We send our best wishes out to the victims of the collision who are still recovering in the hospital. We can only hope that police will track down the driver responsible for this horrific accident and bring them to justice soon.
Hit and run drivers are some of the most selfish motorists on the road. People responsible for a crash like this one have both a moral and a civic duty to pull over and assist accident victims in seeking medical treatment. It’s a miracle that no one was hurt more seriously. We urge the responsible driver to come forward and do the right thing.
