Police say the incident occurred around 11:00 the evening of August 22, 2017 in the southbound lanes of I-95. Though charges are still pending, we know that the crash started when a two-door Volkswagen was rear-ended and pushed into another vehicle ahead of it. This sparked a chain reaction crash involving four vehicles total.

We send our condolences to the man for his loss.

Rear-End Accidents

In accidents like this one, the at-fault driver is often following too closely or distracted while driving. Though we don’t yet know what caused this particular crash, we’ll learn more as the investigation into the incident continues. Given the late hour of the accident, it’s possible that the at-fault driver or drowsy or even drunk at the wheel.

Drivers who fail to monitor changing traffic patterns and adjust their driving accordingly put all drivers on the road at risk. Following too closely is a bad habit that a lot of drivers are guilty of committing every now and then, but many don’t realize the inherent danger in doing so. Many chain reaction crashes like this one can be prevented by leaving enough following distance for an emergency stop.
