Bland Co. Pedestrians Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash

need-an-ambulance-1512594A driver has been charged with three felony counts of hit-and-run following a deadly crash. The incident occurred around 8:40 the morning of February 20, 2017. Three women were on their morning walk around the neighborhood, walking east in the westbound lane of Wilderness Road. The women heard a car approach and went single-file to give the vehicle room to maneuver.

Instead, the driver ran off the right side of the road and into a ditch. Though one walker was able to jump out of the way of the car, two women were not. They were struck by the vehicle and died at the scene of the crash. The driver fled the scene but was apprehended by police shortly after.

The driver later told police he believed he’d struck a deer. Reports indicate that the man smelled of alcohol when he was arrested, and also admitted he’d smoked marijuana the night before the wreck.

We send our condolences to the family of the victims, as well as best wishes to the woman recovering from her injuries sustained in the accident. These women were simply out enjoying a nice morning, some exercise and each other’s company. No one could have predicted such a tragic accident might occur.

In addition to the three counts of felony hit-and-run, the driver has also been charged with one count of reckless driving and one count of failure to report an accident. Because the investigation is ongoing, more charges could be brought against the man.
