Accomack Car Accident Kills Teen, Injures Three
An inexperienced teen driver traveling too fast around a bend may be the cause of a tragic accident in Accomack last week. The Virginian-Pilot reports that four teens were traveling south on Atlantic Avenue in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu late in the evening. As the car came around a curve, the driver lost control of the vehicle. It ran off road, spun around and struck a tree.
Three of the four were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Tragically, one of the teens wearing a seat belt was killed in the accident. The three others – including the driver – were injured and hospitalized.
Though the accident is still under investigation, police say speed was likely a factor in the car running off road. The late hour may also have contributed to the incident. Charges are pending for the 17-year-old driver.
A family preparing for the holidays now must contend with planning a funeral. The loss of a loved one so young in a crash that was likely preventable is incredibly tragic. We send our condolences to her family and friends.
The Commonwealth of Virginia prohibits drivers under the age of 18 from traveling with more than one under 21-year-old passenger in the car. Why? Primarily because of how easily distracted teen drivers can become by their friends. The driver in this crash may be held liable for the damage he caused by violating this rule. At the very least, he is likely to be ticketed.
