Flying Trailer Hitch Crashes Through Windshield, Injures Woman on I-64 in Norfolk
A terrifying and incident occurred on Sunday, July 13th on on I-64 West near the I-264 interchange. According to Virginia State Police, a white Ford Super Duty pickup truck suddenly lost its trailer hitch, which flew into another vehicle.
The heavy metal hitch penetrated the windshield of another vehicle and struck a passenger in the face. The passenger was seriously injured and required an airlift to Sentara Norfolk Hospital.
The pickup truck that lost the trailer hitch did not stop, and authorities are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the vehicle involved. The truck was described as a white Ford Super Duty, last seen heading westbound on I-64. It’s unclear whether the driver even realized the hitch had come off.
This alarming incident serves as a reminder of how critical it is for drivers, especially those towing trailers or using heavy equipment, to secure all components properly. Even one loose part can become a deadly projectile on the highway.
Legal Options for Car Accident Victims
Victims of highway accidents involving flying debris or improperly secured equipment may have the right to pursue compensation through a Virginia personal injury claim. In this case, the injured passenger could potentially bring a claim against the driver of the pickup truck, once identified, for negligence.
All drivers have a legal duty to maintain their vehicles and ensure that all components, including trailer hitches, are safely attached and secured. Failing to do so can cause serious harm to others.
If the responsible party is found, the victim may be entitled to damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other losses. Even if the driver was unaware of the incident, Virginia law still allows for accountability when a failure to properly maintain equipment leads to serious injury.
